Nackstöd

Nackstöd, or neck support, refers to a device designed to support the head and neck in seating. It is most commonly seen as a headrest on car seats, but it is also found on many office chairs, airplane seats, and certain types of furniture. The primary functions are to provide comfort during prolonged sitting and to help maintain a neutral neck position, with an important safety role in vehicles by limiting head movement in a collision.

In vehicles, nackstöd are part of the seatback and are typically adjustable in height and sometimes in distance from the head, and may also tilt. Proper adjustment is important for effectiveness: the top of the headrest should align with or be slightly above the top of the ear, and the head should be as close as possible to the headrest, with only a small gap. This positioning helps reduce the risk of whiplash by supporting the head during rear impacts.

Beyond safety, nackstöd contribute to ergonomic posture by supporting the cervical spine and reducing neck strain during long drives or desk work. In office settings, a well-positioned headrest can aid in maintaining a comfortable, neutral posture; portable neck cushions are available for travel but are supplementary to proper seating.

Regulation and guidance vary by region. Many countries require adjustable head restraints in vehicles to ensure a minimum level of protection, and guidelines emphasize close, secure contact between the head and the support to maximize safety benefits.
