NYKRs, or New York City Regional Transportation Authority (NYCRTA) Rail, refers to the collective rail systems operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City. The term is often used informally to distinguish between the MTA’s subway and commuter rail services, which are collectively managed under the NYCRTA division. The NYCRTA oversees a network of subway lines, commuter rail lines, and bus routes, ensuring seamless integration between different modes of public transportation.

The NYCRTA rail system includes the iconic New York City Subway, the world’s largest rapid transit network, featuring over 470 stations and more than 240 miles of track. In addition to the subway, the division manages the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), Metro-North Railroad, and Staten Island Railway (SIR), which provide commuter rail services connecting the city to surrounding regions. These systems collectively transport millions of passengers daily, playing a vital role in the city’s transportation infrastructure.

The NYCRTA was established in 1968 to consolidate and improve public transit operations in New York City. Over the years, it has undergone various reforms, including the 2008 restructuring that separated the subway and commuter rail operations under a unified authority while maintaining distinct management for each system. The division is responsible for maintaining infrastructure, setting fares, and coordinating service improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability.

The NYCRTA’s rail services face ongoing challenges, including aging infrastructure, funding constraints, and the need for modernization. Initiatives such as the Second Avenue Subway expansion, signal upgrades on LIRR and Metro-North, and the implementation of contactless fare payment aim to address these issues.
