Staten

Staten is a term of Dutch origin meaning "the States" and is used in several contexts, including geography, government, and surnames. In geography, Staten Island is a borough of New York City named from the Dutch Staten Eylandt. The island was named by Dutch navigator Henry Hudson in 1609 in honor of the States General of the Netherlands.
