NVZ

NVZ stands for Nitrate Vulnerable Zone. It is a designation used within agricultural and environmental policy to identify areas where water bodies are considered particularly at risk from nitrate pollution caused by farming activities. The concept arises from the Nitrates Directive of the European Union, which aims to protect surface and groundwater from the adverse effects of excessive nitrate loads.

Designation of an NVZ occurs when water monitoring shows that nitrate concentrations or the risk of pollution exceed acceptable levels in a given area. Once an area is designated, authorities implement a Nitrates Action Programme or equivalent measures that set rules for farming practices within the zone. These measures are designed to reduce nitrate leaching from manure, slurry, and mineral fertilizers into watercourses and aquifers.

Within NVZs, farmers are typically subject to requirements that govern fertilizer and manure use. Common provisions include limits on the amount of nitrogen that can be applied, restrictions on application timing and methods, requirements for proper storage of agricultural waste, and records-keeping to demonstrate compliance. Some regimes also encourage or require the use of catch crops, buffer strips, or other measures to minimize runoff and runoff-related pollution.

The goal of NVZs is to protect water quality, support sustainable agriculture, and reduce the environmental and public health impacts of nitrate pollution.
