NMIBC

NMIBC stands for Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer. This is a type of bladder cancer that has not spread into the muscle layer of the bladder wall. In most cases, NMIBC is diagnosed when the cancer is found in the inner lining of the bladder, which includes the urothelium and the lamina propria. NMIBC is the most common stage of bladder cancer, accounting for the majority of newly diagnosed cases.

The primary symptom of NMIBC is often blood in the urine, known as hematuria. This can be visible to the naked eye or only detectable through microscopic examination. Other symptoms may include frequent urination, painful urination, or an urgent need to urinate. These symptoms can also be indicative of other bladder conditions, so it is important to consult a medical professional for proper diagnosis.

Diagnosis of NMIBC typically involves a cystoscopy, a procedure where a doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera into the bladder through the urethra to visualize the bladder lining. A biopsy is usually performed during cystoscopy to obtain tissue samples for examination under a microscope. Imaging tests such as CT scans or ultrasounds may also be used to assess the extent of the cancer and rule out spread to other areas.

Treatment for NMIBC depends on several factors, including the stage and grade of the cancer, as well as the patient's overall health. Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is a common surgical procedure to remove the visible tumor. Following TURBT, intravesical therapy, which involves instilling medication directly into the bladder, may be administered to reduce the risk of recurrence and progression. These medications can include chemotherapy agents or immunotherapy. Regular follow-up surveillance with cystoscopies is crucial to monitor for any return of the cancer.
