In practical use, NEMbased projects utilize NEM’s native concepts such as mosaics (custom tokens), namespaces (domain-like naming), and on-chain asset management to create and govern digital assets and workflows. They typically interact with the NEM network through available APIs and software development kits (SDKs) provided by the NEM ecosystem.

Background and platform context

The NEM project originated to deliver enterprise-grade distributed ledger technology. The original network, often referred to as NIS1, introduced mosaics, namespaces, multisignature accounts, and other features that support tokenization and programmable asset rules. In parallel, the Symbol platform (successor technology) offers a newer engine with enhanced performance and enterprise-oriented capabilities, including support for both public and private networks. NEMbased initiatives may operate on either generation (NIS1 or Symbol) and some assets or applications migrate between them as part of ecosystem upgrades.
