NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is a federal agency under the Federal Ministry of Health in Nigeria, established in 1993 to regulate and control the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, and chemicals in the country. Its mandate is to ensure the safety, efficacy, quality, and security of these products to protect public health.

NAFDAC operates under the provisions of the National Drug Law (NDL) and the National Food, Drug, Cosmetic, and Medical Device Act (NFDCMDA), which were later consolidated into the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Act (NAFDAC Act). The agency is responsible for licensing and regulating manufacturers, importers, exporters, and distributors of regulated products. It also conducts inspections, tests samples, and enforces compliance with regulatory standards.

One of NAFDAC’s key functions is the registration of drugs, ensuring that only safe and effective products are available in the market. The agency also monitors and regulates the advertising of pharmaceutical and health-related products to prevent misleading claims. Additionally, NAFDAC collaborates with international organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), to align Nigerian regulations with global standards.

NAFDAC has faced challenges, including counterfeit drug trafficking, inadequate infrastructure, and resource constraints. However, it has implemented initiatives like the "NAFDAC Anti-Counterfeit Campaign" and strengthened border controls to combat illegal drug trade. The agency also provides consumer education on safe food and drug practices.

Headquartered in Abuja, NAFDAC operates through regional offices across Nigeria to ensure nationwide coverage. Its leadership includes a Director-General, who is appointed by the President of Nigeria and serves as the chief executive officer. The agency plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health by maintaining high standards in food and drug regulation.
