NAD27 (North American Datum of 1927) is based on the Clarke 1866 ellipsoid and was anchored to a fixed network of ground control points with its origin at Meades Ranch, Kansas. Coordinates in NAD27 are tied to that local framework, so their positions depend on that historical reference. As surveying standards and positioning methods evolved, NAD27 became increasingly out of step with global satellite measurements.

NAD83 (North American Datum of 1983) was defined to be aligned with modern, geocentric reference frames. It uses the GRS80 ellipsoid and is realized through a network designed to be consistent with ITRF-based coordinates. It is centered on the Earth's core and less tied to a single local network, providing greater compatibility with GPS.

Conversion between NAD27 and NAD83 is possible but nontrivial. Transformations such as NADCON (North American Datum Conversion) and high-accuracy networks (HARN) provide grid-based methods to translate coordinates between the datums, with typical differences ranging from a few meters to several tens of meters depending on location. In many modern GIS workflows, NAD83 or WGS84 are preferred, and NAD27 is gradually being phased out. In Canada and parts of North America, variant realizations like NAD83(Canada) or regional adjustments exist.
