Növénypropagáció, often translated as plant propagation, is the process by which new plants are produced from various sources. This encompasses both sexual reproduction, involving seeds, and asexual reproduction, utilizing vegetative parts of the parent plant. Understanding and mastering these techniques is fundamental to horticulture, agriculture, and conservation efforts.

Sexual propagation relies on the genetic combination of two parent plants, typically through the production of seeds. Seeds contain an embryo and stored food, protected by a seed coat. This method allows for genetic diversity, leading to new varieties and adaptations. However, offspring may not be identical to the parent plants and can exhibit variations in traits. Germination, the process of a seed sprouting, is a critical stage requiring specific conditions of moisture, temperature, and sometimes light.

Asexual propagation, also known as vegetative propagation, produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent plant, essentially creating clones. This is achieved by using vegetative parts such as stems, leaves, or roots. Common asexual methods include cuttings, where a piece of stem or leaf is induced to root; layering, where a stem is rooted while still attached to the parent plant; grafting, where a scion (a piece of stem) is joined to the rootstock of another plant; and division, where a clump-forming plant is separated into smaller sections. Asexual propagation is often preferred when a specific desirable trait needs to be maintained, or for plants that produce infertile seeds.
