Müravõimet, also known as *myrmecophobia*, is an irrational and persistent fear of ants. While many people may experience mild discomfort around ants due to their small size and potential for bites or stings, müravõimet refers to an excessive or disproportionate anxiety response that can significantly impact daily life.

The condition is categorized under specific phobias in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), a clinical reference used by mental health professionals. Symptoms of müravõimet may include intense fear, avoidance behaviors, rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, or even panic attacks when encountering ants or even thinking about them. Unlike general discomfort, the fear is often irrational, as ants pose minimal real danger to most individuals.

The exact causes of müravõimet are not fully understood, but psychological theories suggest it may stem from past traumatic experiences, learned behaviors, or evolutionary predispositions. Some individuals may develop the phobia after a negative encounter, such as a painful ant bite, while others might inherit a heightened sensitivity to insects. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common treatment approach, helping individuals gradually confront their fears through exposure therapy and coping strategies.
