Mørkesensitivitet, also known as nyctalopia or night blindness, is a condition characterized by reduced ability to see in low-light conditions or at night. Individuals with mørkesensitivitet may experience difficulty navigating in dim environments, seeing clearly in darkness, or adapting to sudden changes in light intensity. This can significantly impact daily activities such as driving at night, reading in poorly lit rooms, or even walking outside after sunset.

The causes of mørkesensitivitet are varied. It can be a congenital condition, meaning a person is born with it, often due to genetic factors affecting the development of the retina. More commonly, it is acquired later in life due to underlying eye conditions. Vitamin A deficiency is a well-known cause, as vitamin A is crucial for the function of rhodopsin, a light-sensitive pigment in the rods of the retina responsible for vision in low light. Other contributing factors include retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, and certain medications.

Diagnosis of mørkesensitivitet typically involves a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist. This may include visual acuity tests, examination of the retina, and specific tests to assess night vision. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If caused by vitamin A deficiency, supplementation can improve vision. For conditions like cataracts or glaucoma, surgical or medical interventions may be necessary. In cases of genetic retinal diseases, management often focuses on slowing progression and providing assistive devices. While complete restoration of vision may not always be possible, managing the underlying condition can help improve the quality of life for those affected by mørkesensitivitet.
