Mädätyksessä refers to the process of decomposition, a natural biological process where organic matter breaks down into simpler inorganic compounds. This process is essential for nutrient cycling in ecosystems, allowing the reuse of elements like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Decomposition is primarily carried out by decomposers, which include bacteria, fungi, and some invertebrates. These organisms obtain energy by breaking down dead organisms, waste products, and other organic debris.

The rate of decomposition is influenced by several environmental factors. Temperature plays a significant role, with higher temperatures generally accelerating the process, up to an optimal point. Moisture availability is also crucial; decomposition occurs more rapidly in moist environments than in dry ones. The availability of oxygen is another key factor, with aerobic decomposition (requiring oxygen) being more efficient than anaerobic decomposition (occurring in the absence of oxygen). The type of organic matter also affects the speed of decomposition; materials rich in simple sugars and proteins decompose more quickly than those high in lignin and cellulose.

In natural environments, decomposition recycles nutrients, returning them to the soil or water, where they can be utilized by plants and other organisms, forming the basis of food webs. In waste management, controlled decomposition is utilized in processes like composting to break down organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. However, uncontrolled decomposition can lead to the release of greenhouse gases like methane, particularly under anaerobic conditions.
