These methods are widely employed in scientific research, particularly in genetics, molecular biology, and breeding programs. The primary goal is often to study gene function, create novel traits, or improve crop yields and disease resistance.

One common approach is chemical mutagenesis, where organisms are exposed to specific chemical agents known to cause DNA damage. These agents can alter DNA bases, leading to mutations when the cell replicates its DNA. Another significant method is radiation mutagenesis, utilizing ionizing radiation like X-rays or gamma rays. This radiation can cause breaks in DNA strands or damage to the bases, resulting in various types of mutations.

In more targeted applications, site-directed mutagenesis is used. This technique allows scientists to introduce specific, predefined changes at particular locations within a DNA sequence. This is often achieved using molecular biology tools like PCR and engineered oligonucleotides.
