Murdepunktide

Murdepunktide, literally "fracture points" in Estonian, refer to the moments at which a material specimen fails by fracture under applied load. In practice the fracture point is the end of a stress-strain response, where crack growth becomes uncontrollable and the specimen breaks. It depends on material properties, microstructure, flaws, loading rate, and temperature.

Materials show different fracture modes. Metals may fail by ductile fracture, with noticeable plastic deformation and necking, or by brittle fracture, with little deformation and rapid crack propagation. Polymers and composites exhibit a range of behaviors; ceramics are typically brittle. Understanding the fracture point helps predict how a component will perform under service conditions and informs safety factors.

Measurement and analysis involve fracture mechanics and mechanical testing. In a tensile test, the fracture point is the stress and strain at break. The fracture toughness K_IC or the energy release rate G_c describe resistance to crack growth in flawed specimens. Notch sensitivity and temperature dependence influence fracture behavior. Charpy and Izod impact tests measure the energy required to fracture a notched specimen, providing a quick toughness indicator.
