Muovityyppien refers to the classification of plastics based on their chemical structure and properties. This categorization is essential for understanding their behavior, applications, and recycling processes. Plastics are broadly divided into two main categories: thermoplastics and thermosets.

Thermoplastics are plastics that can be repeatedly softened by heating and solidified by cooling. This property makes them easily moldable and recyclable. Common examples include polyethylene (PE), which is used in plastic bags and bottles; polypropylene (PP), found in food containers and automotive parts; polyvinyl chloride (PVC), used in pipes and window frames; and polystyrene (PS), known for its use in disposable cutlery and packaging. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is another important thermoplastic, widely used for beverage bottles.

Thermosets, on the other hand, undergo an irreversible chemical change when heated and cured, forming a rigid, infusible network structure. Once set, they cannot be softened or reshaped by reheating. Examples of thermosets include epoxy resins, used in adhesives and coatings; phenolic resins, found in electrical components and laminates; and silicone, used in sealants and cookware. These materials are generally stronger and more heat-resistant than thermoplastics.

Further classification of plastics can be based on their molecular weight, crystallinity, and additives, which influence their specific characteristics such as flexibility, strength, transparency, and resistance to chemicals or UV radiation. Understanding these different muovityyppien is crucial for selecting the appropriate material for a given application and for developing effective waste management strategies.
