Muotokuvajat are artists who specialize in portrait painting, focusing on capturing the likeness and character of a person. The term describes practitioners whose primary aim is to render recognizable features, posture, and personality, often within commissioned projects such as portraits for individuals, families, or institutions.

In terms of practice, muotokuvajat work with various mediums, most commonly oil on canvas or panel, but also watercolor, tempera, or drawing media. Portraits can be executed in different formats, from head-and-shoulders likenesses to full-length or group portraits.
