Munanjohtim, also known as the *vagus nerve* in English, is the longest cranial nerve in the human body, originating in the brainstem and extending down to the abdomen. It plays a crucial role in the parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates involuntary bodily functions and promotes relaxation. The vagus nerve connects the brain to various internal organs, including the heart, lungs, digestive tract, and vocal cords, influencing processes such as heart rate, digestion, and stress responses.

The name *munanjohtim* derives from Finnish, where *muna* means "egg" and *johtim* means "nerve," referencing its early observation in the neck region near the carotid artery, resembling an egg-shaped structure. In medical terminology, it is classified as cranial nerve X (CN X) due to its position among the 12 pairs of cranial nerves.

The vagus nerve has significant implications in both health and disease. Stimulation of the vagus nerve can reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and improve mood, making it a target for treatments in conditions like epilepsy, depression, and inflammatory diseases. Conversely, dysfunction or damage to the vagus nerve may contribute to disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, heart rhythm abnormalities, and chronic fatigue.

Research into vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has expanded its therapeutic applications, including experimental treatments for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and obesity.
