Multisectorale

Multisectorale is the feminine singular form of the Dutch adjective multisectoraal, used to describe approaches, strategies, or collaborations that involve multiple sectors of society. In policy and management, a multisectorale approach seeks to align goals and actions across ministries, agencies, civil society organizations, and private firms to address complex problems that span more than one domain, such as health, education, housing, and the environment.

Applications include multisectorale planning in public health, where health outcomes depend on factors outside the health system; in urban development, where housing, transport, and land use are coordinated; and in climate resilience, where energy, infrastructure, and disaster management must work together. The term is closely related to English multisectoral, as well as cross-sectoral and intersectoral approaches.

Advantages of a multisectorale approach include synergies, a more comprehensive impact, and more efficient use of resources. Challenges include coordination across institutions with different budgets, timelines, and accountability frameworks; data sharing; governance; and the potential for diffusion of responsibility.

It is used in policy documents, strategic plans, and program design in governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations. The concept emphasizes collaboration across sectors to address complex societal issues, often requiring new governance arrangements, shared indicators, and joint funding mechanisms.
