Multimateriality refers to the characteristic of an object or system being composed of multiple distinct materials. This can range from simple combinations like a screw and nut to complex integrated structures. The deliberate use of different materials in a single product allows for the optimization of properties such as strength, flexibility, conductivity, weight, and cost. For instance, a smartphone combines glass for the screen, metal for the frame, and various plastics and semiconductors for internal components.

The design and manufacturing processes for multimaterial objects are often more intricate than those for single-material items. Techniques like overmolding, insert molding, and additive manufacturing (3D printing) enable the precise joining or co-creation of different materials. This allows for the creation of parts with tailored functionalities in specific regions. For example, a tool handle might be made of a hard plastic for structural integrity and a softer, grippier rubber overmolded onto it for improved ergonomics.

Multimateriality is a key concept in advanced manufacturing, product design, and material science. It drives innovation by enabling the development of lighter, stronger, more efficient, and more sustainable products. The ability to combine materials also opens possibilities for novel functionalities, such as self-healing composites or smart textiles that integrate electronic components.
