Multataan

Multataan is a Finnish horticultural term referring to the act of applying a mulch layer to soil around plants. The noun multa means soil or dirt, and multata is the verb from which the passive form multataan is derived, indicating that mulch is being applied or is to be applied by someone.

In gardening and agriculture, mulching is used to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, stabilize soil temperature, and improve soil structure as organic mulch decomposes. Common mulching materials include organic options such as bark chips, wood chips, straw, leaves, and compost; inorganic options include gravel or stones and, in some contexts, plastic mulch.

Application guidelines emphasize keeping mulch away from stems or trunks to prevent rot, typically leaving a 2–3 cm gap. A mulch layer of about 5–10 cm is common for organic materials, adjusted for material type and plant needs. Mulch should be refreshed as it decomposes, and care is taken to avoid creating overly thick layers that can suffocate roots.

Seasonally, mulching is often performed in spring after planting or in autumn in temperate regions, and is particularly beneficial in drought-prone conditions to reduce evaporation. The practice can improve soil health over time but may require periodic maintenance to prevent pests or disease associated with excessive or inappropriate mulch.
