Motordrehzahl, often abbreviated as RPM for Revolutions Per Minute, is a measurement of how fast an engine's crankshaft is rotating. It is a fundamental parameter in internal combustion engines and electric motors, indicating the speed of operation. The motordrehzahl is crucial for monitoring engine performance, managing fuel efficiency, and ensuring proper operation within safe limits.

In gasoline and diesel engines, the crankshaft rotates as a direct result of the pistons moving up and down within the cylinders. Each full rotation of the crankshaft corresponds to a specific sequence of engine events, such as intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. Higher motordrehzahl generally means more power is being produced, but also typically consumes more fuel and can lead to increased wear if sustained at excessively high levels.

The motordrehzahl is displayed to the operator via a tachometer, usually found on the vehicle's dashboard. Drivers use this information to select appropriate gears for different driving conditions, optimize fuel economy, and avoid over-revving the engine. Engine control units (ECUs) in modern vehicles constantly monitor and adjust motordrehzahl based on various inputs, including throttle position, engine load, and vehicle speed.
