Motorconfiguraties refers to the arrangement of cylinders and their orientation within an internal combustion engine. This configuration significantly impacts an engine's size, shape, power output, smoothness, and cost. Common configurations include inline engines, V-engines, flat or boxer engines, and Wankel engines.

An inline engine, also known as a straight engine, has all cylinders in a single row. Inline-four engines are very common due to their compact size and balance, while inline-six engines are known for their smoothness. V-engines have cylinders arranged in two banks, forming a V-shape when viewed from the end. This allows for shorter crankshafts and more compact engines, often used in sports cars and larger vehicles. Common V-configurations include V6, V8, and V12.

Flat or boxer engines have cylinders arranged horizontally opposite each other, lying flat. This low center of gravity provides excellent balance and reduces vibration, making them popular in performance vehicles and some aircraft. The Wankel engine, or rotary engine, uses a triangular rotor instead of pistons, offering a compact and high-revving design but often facing challenges with fuel efficiency and emissions.
