Motivationsniveau

Motivationsniveau, in English often rendered as motivation level, is a construct used in psychology to describe the current degree to which a person is prepared to engage in goal-directed behavior. It captures the readiness to initiate, sustain, and regulate effort toward a goal and is influenced by cognitive evaluations, emotional states, and contextual factors. A high motivationsniveau denotes strong willingness to invest time and energy, while a low level is associated with reduced effort, avoidance, or task disengagement.

The most common theoretical grounding treats motivationsniveau as the product of expectancy and value, with costs as a moderating factor (expectancy–value theory). Self-determination theory also informs the concept, distinguishing autonomous (intrinsic) and controlled (extrinsic) motivation, with autonomous motivation typically associated with higher and more persistent motivationsniveau.

Because it is dynamic, motivationsniveau can vary across tasks and over time, influenced by task difficulty, feedback, relevance, autonomy, and social context. Personal factors such as self-efficacy and interest interact with situational cues to raise or lower the level.

Measurement and use: Researchers assess motivationsniveau through self-report scales, momentary assessments, behavioral indicators like time on task, persistence, or initiation latency. In education, health, and work contexts, higher motivationsniveau generally relates to better engagement and performance, but the relation is moderated by ability, opportunity, and external constraints.

Critique: The term remains somewhat informal, with varying definitions and measurement approaches. Operationalization can be task-specific, limiting cross-study comparability. Cultural and individual differences may affect how motivation is experienced and reported.
