Mosquiteiros

Mosquiteiros, also known as mosquito nets, are fabric screens used to protect people from mosquitoes and other insects. Typically made of fine mesh, they are designed to allow air to circulate while preventing insects from entering. Mosquiteiros are commonly used in tropical and subtropical regions where mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus are prevalent.

The most common type is a bed net, which is draped over a bed to create a physical barrier. These can be hung from a frame around the bed or from the ceiling. Other variations include window and door screens, which permanently cover openings to prevent insect entry, and portable nets used for camping or travel.

Mosquiteiros are an effective and relatively inexpensive method of personal protection against insect bites. Many modern mosquito nets are treated with insecticides, such as pyrethroids, which further enhance their protective capabilities by killing mosquitoes that land on the fabric. These insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are a key tool in global malaria control programs. Proper use and maintenance, such as repairing holes and washing them regularly, are important to ensure their effectiveness.
