Moottoriteet

Moottoriteet is a term used in Finnish mechanical engineering to refer to the teeth on gears that engage to transfer motion from a motor to other parts of a machine. In engines, moottoriteet participate in the timing and power transmission between the crankshaft and the camshaft, as well as driving auxiliary gears such as the oil pump and other accessories. They come in different forms, including spur and helical gear sets, and may be arranged in gear trains within timing systems or accessory drives. The teeth are typically made from steel alloys and undergo heat treatment to hardness and wear resistance; manufacturing methods include gear hobbing, shaping, and milling.

Proper material selection, surface finish, and lubrication reduce wear and noise and extend life. Wear or damage to moottoriteet can cause increased noise, loss of timing accuracy, misalignment, or engine damage. Inspection focuses on tooth wear, pitting, cracking, and backlash; maintenance includes regular lubrication, checking gear alignment, and replacing worn gear sets. In modern engines, moottoriteet coexist with other timing technologies such as timing belts or chains; in some designs, gear-driven timing provides precise, durable control at high engine speeds.

The term can also apply to gear teeth in other motor-driven systems beyond engines, including industrial gearboxes and robotics.
