Montivipera

Montivipera is a genus of vipers found in the mountainous regions of southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia. The genus currently contains four recognized species, all of which are venomous. These snakes are typically found in alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and scrubland at elevations ranging from around 1000 to over 2000 meters.

Species within the Montivipera genus are characterized by their relatively stout bodies, broad heads, and prominent dorsal keeled scales. Their coloration often provides camouflage within their rocky and mountainous habitats, featuring patterns of gray, brown, or reddish-brown with darker markings. The size of Montivipera snakes varies by species, but they are generally considered medium-sized vipers.

The diet of Montivipera snakes primarily consists of small mammals, lizards, and sometimes birds. They are ambush predators, relying on their camouflage to surprise prey. Their venom is hemotoxic, causing tissue damage and coagulopathic effects, though bites are rarely fatal to humans with prompt medical attention.

Reproduction in Montivipera is ovoviviparous, meaning the eggs hatch internally and the young are born live. The genus is endemic to a specific geographic range, and conservation concerns exist for some species due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
