Montecatini

Montecatini-Terme, commonly known as Montecatini Terme, is a town and comune in the Tuscany region of central Italy. It is part of the province of Pistoia and lies in the Valdinievole, between the Apennine foothills and the Arno valley. The town is famous for its thermal springs and has long been a spa destination.

Development around the springs accelerated in the 18th and 19th centuries, leading to the construction of spa pavilions, hotels, and promenades in styles associated with the Belle Époque and the Liberty movement. The principal spa complexes are Terme Tettuccio, Terme Leopoldine, and Terme Excelsior, all integrated into a network of bathhouses and gardens that draw visitors seeking wellness treatments and leisure.

Above the spa district sits Montecatini Alto, the historic hill town, which is linked to Montecatini Terme by a funicular railway. The two areas preserve different atmospheres: the medieval streets of Montecatini Alto and the modern spa quarter below. In contemporary times, the local economy relies on spa and wellness tourism, as well as conferences and cultural events organized in the town’s parks, theatres, and historic baths.
