Valdinievole

Valdinievole, or Val di Nievole, is a geographical and historical region in central Tuscany, centered on the Nievole river valley. It lies between the Apennine foothills and the western hills near Lucca, and falls mainly within the province of Pistoia. The valley runs roughly from Montecatini Terme in the north to Pescia in the south and includes several municipalities such as Montecatini Terme, Monsummano Terme, Buggiano, Larciano, Marliana, Pieve a Nievole, and Collodi (a frazione of Pescia). Its landscape combines spa towns, medieval villages, and agricultural hills.

Historically, Valdinievole has ancient roots with settlements dating back to the Middle Ages. The area gained prominence in the spa and thermals economy from the 18th century onward, with Montecatini Terme developing into a well-known thermal resort. The region also supported textile and craft activities in some towns, contributing to local growth and urban development.

Economy and culture: Today the local economy relies on spa tourism, small industries, agriculture, and services. Tourism is driven by the spa towns, hillside landscapes, and architectural heritage spanning Renaissance and medieval periods. Cultural highlights include the Collodi area near Pescia, home to the Villa Garzoni and the Pinocchio Park, which are linked to the Pinocchio literary heritage and attract visitors.

Transport: The Valdinievole is connected by a rail line linking Lucca and Pistoia, with stations at Montecatini Terme, Pescia, and other towns, and by regional roads that provide access to Florence, Lucca, and Pisa.
