Monopolverhalten refers to the actions and strategies employed by a firm that holds a monopoly in a particular market. A monopoly is characterized by a single seller or producer dominating the entire supply of a good or service, facing no significant competition. This dominant position allows the monopolist to exert considerable influence over market prices and output.

Monopolists often engage in pricing strategies to maximize their profits. Unlike firms in competitive markets that are price takers, a monopolist is a price maker. They can set prices above their marginal cost of production. This often leads to a lower quantity of goods being produced and sold compared to a competitive market, resulting in a deadweight loss to society. To prevent new firms from entering the market and challenging their position, monopolists may also engage in barrier-increasing behaviors. These can include predatory pricing, aggressive advertising campaigns, or securing exclusive control over essential resources or distribution channels.

Furthermore, a monopolist might invest in research and development to maintain their technological advantage or to create new products that further solidify their market dominance. However, the absence of competition can also reduce the incentive for innovation compared to a dynamic, competitive landscape. Regulatory bodies often monitor monopolar behavior to ensure fair market practices and protect consumer interests, intervening through antitrust laws, price controls, or mandating market separation.
