Monopied

Monopied refers to a single-legged support device, most commonly associated with photography and videography equipment. It is essentially a specialized tripod or monopod that, instead of three or one distinct legs, features a single central column that is wider and more stable than a traditional monopod. This wider base can provide improved stability, especially when dealing with heavier cameras or in situations where a full tripod is impractical.

The design of a monopied often incorporates a wider, sometimes triangular or three-pronged, base that is either fixed or collapsible. This base allows the monopied to stand on its own, unlike a standard monopod which requires leaning against something or being held. Some monopieds have articulated feet on the base to adapt to uneven surfaces. The primary advantage of a monopied over a traditional monopod is its self-standing capability, reducing the need for constant holding and offering a greater degree of stability without the bulk of a full tripod.

Monopieds are often used by nature photographers, sports photographers, and videographers who need to move quickly between shots but still require a stable platform for their equipment. They offer a compromise between the portability of a monopod and the stability of a tripod. The increased base area also contributes to better weight distribution, making them suitable for larger lenses and camera bodies.
