Mononukleózis

Mononukleózis, commonly known as the "kissing disease," is an infectious illness primarily caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). This virus is spread through saliva, making close contact such as kissing a common mode of transmission. It can also spread through sharing drinks, food, or utensils.

The incubation period for mononucleosis typically ranges from four to six weeks. Symptoms often develop gradually and can include extreme fatigue, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes, particularly in the neck. A rash may also appear, and the spleen can become enlarged, which requires careful attention to avoid rupture. In some cases, the liver may also be affected.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination and blood tests that look for antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus. There is no specific cure for mononucleosis, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms. This typically involves rest, adequate hydration, and pain relievers for fever and sore throat. Most individuals recover fully within a few weeks to a couple of months, although fatigue can persist for longer. The Epstein-Barr virus remains in the body lifelong, but it usually remains dormant after the initial infection.
