Monohydroksiliyhdisteitä, or monohydroxy compounds, are organic molecules that contain a single hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to a carbon atom. This hydroxyl group is the defining functional group of alcohols and phenols. Alcohols are characterized by the hydroxyl group being attached to an aliphatic carbon atom, which is a carbon atom that is part of a non-aromatic hydrocarbon chain. Phenols, on the other hand, have the hydroxyl group directly bonded to an aromatic ring.

The properties of monohydroxy compounds are significantly influenced by the presence of the polar hydroxyl group. This polarity allows for hydrogen bonding, which affects their solubility in water and their boiling points, generally making them more soluble and having higher boiling points than comparable hydrocarbons. Methanol is a crucial industrial chemical used in the production of formaldehyde and other compounds. Phenols are important in the synthesis of plastics, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. The reactivity of the hydroxyl group allows these compounds to undergo various chemical reactions, such as oxidation and esterification, making them versatile building blocks in organic synthesis.
