Monivalintarasteikko

Monivalintarasteikko, often translated as multiple-choice course or multiple-choice orienteering, is a variation of the traditional orienteering sport. In a monivalintarasteikko, participants are presented with a map and a list of control points. However, unlike standard orienteering where each control point has a specific location, in monivalintarasteikko, each control point description is accompanied by several possible locations marked on the map. The competitor's task is to correctly identify the actual location of the control point from the given options.

The objective is to find the correct control point as indicated by its unique code or description. Participants are typically given a control card or a digital device to record their choices. They must then navigate to the designated control point and confirm their arrival, often by punching the card or registering electronically. The challenge lies in accurately interpreting the map and the control descriptions to distinguish the correct location from the decoys.

Monivalintarasteikko can be used as a training tool to improve map reading skills and the ability to interpret control descriptions. It can also be incorporated into events for participants of varying skill levels, as it reduces the reliance on precise navigation to a single point and emphasizes observational and analytical abilities. The scoring typically involves a penalty for incorrect choices or a time penalty for each wrong selection. The winner is usually the participant with the fewest errors or the fastest time, depending on the event's specific rules.
