Monisäikeistetyt is a Finnish term that translates to "multithreaded" in English. In computing, multithreading refers to the ability of a program or operating system to execute multiple threads concurrently. A thread is the smallest sequence of programmed instructions that can be managed independently by a scheduler. This allows a single process to perform multiple tasks seemingly at the same time, leading to improved performance and responsiveness, especially in applications that involve I/O operations or complex computations.

Multithreading can be achieved through two main approaches: preemptive multitasking and cooperative multitasking. In preemptive multitasking, the operating system can interrupt a running thread and switch to another, ensuring that no single thread monopolizes the CPU. Cooperative multitasking, on the other hand, relies on threads voluntarily yielding control of the CPU. Modern operating systems primarily utilize preemptive multitasking.

The benefits of multithreading include enhanced user experience, as the application remains responsive even when performing background tasks. It also allows for better utilization of multi-core processors, where different threads can run on different cores simultaneously, significantly speeding up execution. However, multithreading introduces complexities such as race conditions, deadlocks, and the need for synchronization mechanisms to manage shared resources safely. Proper implementation of multithreading is crucial to avoid these issues and achieve the desired performance gains.
