Each module entry typically includes module code, title, level (Bachelor, Master), ECTS credits, semester offered, duration, type of module (lecture, seminar, laboratory, practical), learning objectives, content overview, required and recommended literature, teaching and assessment methods, and any prerequisites or co-requisites.

The catalog serves as a central planning instrument for students to assemble a study plan that satisfies degree requirements and for the administration to monitor compliance with Prüfungsordnung and accreditation standards. It distinguishes compulsory modules, elective modules, and compulsory elective modules, and may indicate recommended study sequences, cross-references to related modules, and possible recognitions of prior learning. The Modulenkatalog is usually maintained by faculties or program offices in cooperation with central academic administration and updated regularly, typically at least once per academic year.
