A model release is a contract between a model and the photographer, agency, or rights holder that grants permission to use the model’s likeness in photographs or video for defined purposes. It helps protect both the creator’s rights to publish and the model’s rights to control use of their image.

A typical release identifies the parties, describes the material (still photos and/or video), and states the permitted uses (advertising, publicity, packaging, online, broadcast, or stock library), the geographic scope, and the duration of the permission. It may specify compensation, whether the rights are exclusive or non-exclusive, and any restrictions on use, alterations, or presentation of the image.

Key provisions often include representations that the model consents to the use, that the model has the capacity to sign, and, for minors, that a parent or guardian provides consent. The release outlines the field of use, any limitations, and waivers of privacy or publicity claims. Some forms also address moral rights, withdrawal options, and the model’s express acknowledgment of the nature of the uses.

Types and uses vary: commercial releases are common for advertising and stock photography, while editorial uses may not require a release in all jurisdictions if the subject is not the focus or if the usage falls under news reporting. Some releases also cover related rights to clothing, logos, or locations to prevent trademark or location disputes.

Practical considerations include the increasing prevalence of electronic releases and the fact that a release does not transfer copyright ownership of the image. It is a licensing tool rather than a sale of rights, and its enforceability depends on local law. For minors or sensitive content, additional safeguards and consent may apply.
