MobileHotspots

MobileHotspots are wireless systems that use cellular data to create a local Wi-Fi network accessible by multiple devices. They can be built into smartphones via tethering or exist as dedicated portable hotspot devices (often called MiFis). The hotspot uses a SIM card and cellular connection to provide Wi-Fi coverage in a small, portable area.

Devices and technology commonly support 802.11n, 802.11ac, or 802.11ax on 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz bands. Modern MobileHotspots may support 5G and LTE networks, enabling higher speeds where available. Security features typically include WPA2 or WPA3 encryption, a defined SSID, and a password; many devices also support guest networks and basic firewall options, with firmware updates improving security and performance.

Plans and usage depend on the cellular data package attached to the hotspot. Data caps, throttling, and roaming costs vary by provider and region. Portable hotspots are useful for travel, remote work, or situations where fixed broadband is unavailable. Battery life can range from several hours to more than a day, influenced by usage, network type, and device efficiency.

Setup is generally straightforward: enable the mobile hotspot feature, choose a network name and strong password, and connect devices via Wi-Fi. Limitations include dependence on cellular coverage, data limits, and potential security risks if the network is left unsecured or if default credentials are not changed.
