Mittelgesichts

Mittelgesichts is a German-derived term commonly used in medical and anatomical contexts to refer to the midface region, the middle third of the human face situated between the orbital rims and the upper jaw. Anatomically, the area includes the maxillae, zygomatic bones, nasal bones, portions of the ethmoid and lacrimal bones, and the overlying soft tissues such as the cheeks, nose, and upper lip. The midface plays key roles in mastication, respiration, sensory function, facial expression, and aesthetics.

In clinical practice, the Mittelgesichts region is important in specialties including maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, dentistry, plastic surgery and forensic anthropology. Common concerns affecting the midface include traumatic fractures (for example, Le Fort fracture patterns), congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and palate or midfacial hypoplasia, infections, neoplasms, and age-related soft tissue changes. Evaluation typically involves clinical examination supplemented by imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) or cone-beam CT for bony detail and three-dimensional assessment.

Treatment approaches depend on the underlying problem and may range from conservative management to surgical reconstruction, including osteotomies, internal fixation, bone grafting or distraction osteogenesis, and soft-tissue procedures. Anthropometric and cephalometric measurements of the midface are also used in research and surgical planning to assess growth, symmetry and aesthetic outcomes. The term itself originates from the German words Mittel (middle) and Gesicht (face).
