MitralklappenCleft is a congenital heart defect characterized by an incomplete closure of the mitral valve, which is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart. This incomplete closure results in a gap or cleft in one of the mitral valve leaflets, most commonly the anterior leaflet.

The primary consequence of a mitral valve cleft is mitral regurgitation, where blood leaks backward from the left ventricle into the left atrium during ventricular contraction. The severity of regurgitation can vary widely, from mild to severe, depending on the size and extent of the cleft. Symptoms associated with mitral valve cleft and its resulting regurgitation can include shortness of breath, fatigue, and a heart murmur. In more severe cases, it can lead to heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.

The exact cause of mitral valve cleft is not fully understood, but it is believed to arise during fetal development. It can occur in isolation or be associated with other congenital heart defects or syndromes, such as DiGeorge syndrome. Diagnosis typically involves echocardiography, which allows for visualization of the valve structure and assessment of regurgitation. Other diagnostic tools may include cardiac MRI or cardiac catheterization.

Treatment for mitral valve cleft depends on the severity of the mitral regurgitation and the presence of any associated symptoms or complications. Mild cases may not require specific treatment and can be monitored regularly. Moderate to severe regurgitation often necessitates surgical intervention. Surgical options include mitral valve repair, where the cleft is surgically closed to restore proper valve function, or mitral valve replacement if repair is not feasible.
