The term combines the popular abbreviation MITM with attacker, signaling a focus on interception and tampering of communications.

In concept, a MitMattacker is depicted as attempting to place themselves between two communicating parties to observe, alter, or inject data into the traffic without the endpoints fully recognizing the intrusion. This archetype is often used to illustrate how attackers can compromise confidentiality and integrity in transit, especially on unsecured networks or with weakly protected services.

Typical high-level techniques associated with MitMattacker scenarios include intercepting traffic on local networks through methods such as rogue access points or address resolution protocol (ARP) manipulation, redirecting traffic via DNS spoofing, and exploiting weaknesses in session or transport-layer security.
