MitID

MitID is Denmark's national digital identity system used for secure online authentication and access to public-sector services and, in many cases, private-sector services. It enables citizens and businesses to prove their identity online and to log in to government portals and a wide range of online services that require identity verification.

MitID was introduced to replace the earlier NemID. Development was led by the Danish Agency for Digitisation (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen) in collaboration with banks and other stakeholders. The rollout began in 2021 and occurred gradually, with NemID being phased out in the following years as users migrated to MitID.

How it works: Individuals create a MitID account through a participating bank or government service. Authentication uses two-factor verification, combining something you know (a password) with something you have (the MitID app on a smartphone or a code card, or another secure token). The MitID app can approve sign-ins by push notification or generate one-time codes; a code card remains available as a backup for those who cannot use the app.

Security and privacy: MitID employs multi-factor authentication and is designed to meet Danish security and privacy standards. Personal data involved in the process is handled by participating institutions under applicable data-protection rules, with oversight by the government and regulators.

MitID is now the standard method for online authentication in Denmark for both public services and many private-sector applications, succeeding NemID.
