Minaudière

A minaudière is a small, rigid, box-like evening bag designed to be carried by women at formal events. Unlike larger handbags, it has no practical compartments and is meant to be an elegant accessory rather than a utility bag. The exterior is typically a metal case—gold, silver, or brass—often embellished with enamel, crystals, faux or precious stones, or mother-of-pearl. The case opens on a hinged lid with a clasp and may be worn in the hand, carried by a short chain, or clipped to a dress.

The term is French, and its precise origin is unclear; the style became popular in the early 20th century, reaching prominence during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s when jewelers and fashion houses produced jeweled, coin-like cases to accompany evening attire. They were designed to carry only a few essentials such as lipstick, a compact mirror, or money, reflecting the era’s emphasis on coordinated, decorative accessories.

In the modern market, minaudières remain a luxury item produced by high-end maisons such as Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, Judith Leiber, Cartier, and Louis Vuitton. Contemporary designs vary from highly ornate crystal and enamel pieces to minimalist metal cases, often incorporating signature motifs or brand logos. While less practical than traditional purses, the minaudière continues to symbolize glamour and craftsmanship in formal fashion.
