Militärregimer

Militärregimer, also known as military dictatorships or military juntas, are forms of government characterized by rule of the military. In such regimes, the military, rather than civilian elected officials, holds ultimate political power and controls the state. This typically occurs when the armed forces seize power through a coup d'état, overthrowing the existing government.

The transition to a military regime can be justified by the military itself through various pretexts, such as restoring order, combating corruption, or protecting national security. However, these regimes often suspend or abolish democratic institutions, including parliaments, political parties, and constitutional rights. Civil liberties, such as freedom of speech, assembly, and the press, are frequently restricted or suppressed.

Military regimes are often characterized by a hierarchical command structure mirroring that of the armed forces. Decisions are made by a small group of high-ranking military officers, sometimes referred to as a junta. The economy may be heavily influenced by military interests, and dissent is typically met with repression. International responses to military regimes vary, ranging from condemnation and sanctions to cautious engagement. The duration of military rule can differ significantly, with some regimes eventually transitioning back to civilian governance, while others persist for extended periods.
