MilieuDNA is a proposed concept describing molecular readouts that encode information about an organism’s surrounding milieu—the environmental conditions, ecological community, and physical context in which DNA is produced or operates. In this framework, DNA-derived data are interpreted not only as hereditary or functional information but also as a potential record of ambient influences such as habitat type, exposure to stressors, or community composition. The term appears in speculative discussions and early research proposals as a way to frame how environmental context might be inferred from DNA‑level signals.

The term MilieuDNA does not have a single, universally accepted definition and is used variably in literature. It is often discussed in relation to environmental DNA (eDNA), metagenomics, and epigenetic or other context‑sensitive molecular markers. Proponents describe MilieuDNA as a synthesis of signals from host, microbiome, and environmental DNA that together reflect the conditions surrounding a biological sample.
