MikroFulfillment is a term used to describe a network of micro-fulfillment centers designed to fulfill e-commerce orders from urban, compact facilities. These centers employ automation, compact storage, and proximity to customers to reduce last-mile delivery times and logistics costs. MikroFulfillment facilities are typically much smaller than traditional regional distribution centers, ranging from a few thousand to several tens of thousands of square feet, and are often located in city neighborhoods, retail rooftops, or existing warehouses. The goal is to enable rapid picking, packing, and shipping of online orders, sometimes within same-day or next-day windows.

The operating model combines automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic pickers, conveyors, and human labor with sophisticated software. A warehouse management system, slotting optimization, and demand forecasting coordinate inventory placement and order routing across a network of sites. Real-time visibility, dynamic allocation, and carrier integration support fast fulfillment and predictable delivery estimates. Returns processing is typically handled at the same facilities to recover value quickly.

Benefits of MikroFulfillment include faster delivery, improved service levels for urban customers, reduced last-mile costs, and better inventory control in densely populated markets. Limitations involve high upfront capital expenditure for automation and real estate, ongoing maintenance, energy use, and the need for skilled automation and IT integration. The approach is most applicable to retailers and e-commerce brands aiming to offer same-day or next-day options in major cities, as part of a broader omnichannel strategy.
