Midsommarafton, also known as Midsummer Eve, is a traditional Swedish holiday celebrated on the evening of June 23rd, marking the summer solstice. The event is deeply rooted in ancient Nordic and Germanic pagan traditions, particularly those associated with the goddess Freya, who was believed to walk the earth on this night. Over time, Midsommarafton has evolved into a festive celebration blending folklore, nature, and modern customs.

The celebration typically begins in the late afternoon, with gatherings in parks, gardens, or outdoor venues. One of the most iconic traditions is the lighting of maypoles, tall wooden poles adorned with greenery, flowers, and ribbons. These poles are decorated with fresh greenery like birch branches and crowned with flower garlands, symbolizing fertility and the arrival of summer. People dance around the maypole in a lively, rhythmic pattern, often accompanied by folk music and singing.

Another key element of Midsommarafton is the consumption of traditional foods, such as herring, potatoes, and various types of pickled vegetables.
