Microproduction is a term used to describe production activities conducted at a small scale, typically by individuals or small teams, using affordable tools and flexible workflows. It contrasts with mass production and large-scale outsourcing by prioritizing speed, customization, and local value creation. The concept spans multiple domains, most notably media production and craft or light manufacturing, but it can apply to any process that yields limited quantities of a product or asset.

In media, microproduction refers to low-budget, quickly executed projects such as independent films, video content, podcasts, and digital media productions produced with small crews and compact schedules. In manufacturing and crafts, microproduction encompasses small-batch or on-demand production enabled by desktop fabrication tools such as 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, and digital design software. It often relies on distributed networks, global marketplaces for inputs, and online platforms for design sharing or crowdfunding.

Key characteristics include low upfront capital, flexible labor, rapid prototyping, and the ability to tailor outputs to specific customers or locales. Benefits include reduced risk, shorter time-to-market, and resilience through local production loops. Challenges may include limited economies of scale, maintaining consistent quality, supply chain constraints for inputs, IP and licensing issues, and difficulties in achieving mainstream distribution.
