Microprocessor-oriented is an adjective used to describe systems, designs, or development practices that are centered on general-purpose microprocessors as the primary computing element. Such systems typically arrange hardware around a distinct CPU core with separate memory and I/O subsystems, allowing full-fledged operating systems and complex software stacks.

Historically, the term contrasts with microcontroller-oriented design, which integrates CPU, memory, and peripherals on a single chip for tightly constrained tasks. In microprocessor-oriented environments, the CPU is usually complemented by external RAM, non-volatile storage, and a range of peripherals connected via buses and interfaces; performance, bandwidth, and power are managed at the system level.

Key characteristics include the use of established ISA families such as x86, ARM, MIPS, or RISC-V, development toolchains (compilers, assemblers, debuggers), and software ecosystems that support multitasking, virtualization, and complex operating systems. There is greater emphasis on software portability and hardware abstraction layers.

Common applications include desktop, server, and workstation platforms, as well as high-end embedded systems that require flexible software environments. In education and research, microprocessor-oriented design emphasizes architecture exploration, performance optimization, and system software.
