These facilities typically occupy a fraction of the space of conventional warehouses, often utilizing existing retail spaces, dark stores, or dedicated smaller buildings. Automation is a key characteristic of MFCs, employing robotics, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), and sophisticated software to manage inventory and fulfill orders efficiently. The rise of microfulfillment centers is largely driven by the increasing consumer demand for faster shipping, including same-day or even sub-hour delivery options. They play a crucial role in the "last mile" of delivery, bridging the gap between distribution networks and the final customer. MFCs can also support click-and-collect services, allowing customers to pick up online orders at a convenient location.

By decentralizing inventory and placing it closer to demand points, MFCs help reduce transportation costs and delivery lead times.
