Microbes ferment fibers into short-chain fatty acids (acetate, propionate, butyrate) that impact energy balance, glucose regulation, and immune function. Diets high in fat or animal protein can favor bile-tolerant and proteolytic bacteria, reducing diversity and shifting functional potential.

Health implications span metabolic, immune, and possibly neuropsychological domains. Observational studies link microbiota alterations with obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory diseases, and mood-related conditions; interventional trials show modest benefits from fiber enrichment or prebiotics, with results that vary across individuals and contexts.

Methods include sequencing-based profiling (16S rRNA gene surveys and metagenomics), metabolomics, and controlled dietary interventions. Evidence combines cross-sectional associations with short- and medium-term trials; establishing causality remains challenging, and findings often reflect population-level patterns rather than universal effects.

Limitations include substantial inter-individual variability, context dependence, and incomplete understanding of dose, duration, and long-term outcomes. The field emphasizes cautious interpretation of probiotic or dietary claims, while future work aims to personalize dietary recommendations based on microbiota composition and function.
